The Guardian - review of 'The Dawn of Light'

The Guardian - review of
"Dawn of Light is even better, with Postma's supple and softly blown alto and soprano lines, .... and the creative attentions of a superb Dutch piano trio contributing to its magnetism."

"On The Observer, the leader's soprano sax twists effortlessly between free-time and swing over the urgent buffetings of pianist Marc van Roon, bassist Frans van der Hoeven and drummer Martijn Vink, and Postma initially builds the melody in doodles and casually dropped clues on the only cover, Thelonious Monk's Off Minor. It's a set with barely a flat moment."
This review by John Fordham of Tineke Postma Quartet's CD The Dawn of Light was published in the Guardian and guardian.co.uk. For this edison award winning CD I could make a contribution with two original compositions, Newland and Beyond Category. I also contributed as artistic producer during the mixing and mastering processes.

Review in South Korean MMJAZZ

Translation of the CD review of 'Inventions & Variation' from the South Korean Jazz Magazine MMJAZZ.

Probably you are unfamiliar with the name  Marc van Roon. But I assume that many of you know the Pianist of European Jazz Trio. I am very glad to have the news that his own CD has been released since he has been busy more with other projects include European Jazz Trio than its own.

This album is full of Marc’s musical journeys  and it has been released through Challenge Records.

What stands out are the [Inventions and Variations] he uses (from the Classical forms) as main themes showing his solid musical background in both Classical and Jazz.

There are 11 variations and 15 Inventions which are short but give us a strong impression showing us his admirable creativity and  artisan spirit.

I would recommend  you to listen to this record all at once so that you can appreciate better the whole concept Marc is creating. You can also observe the variety of choices he makes when it comes to develop a story: from a single motive, from a short melody or even from a certain piano accompaniment.

In ‘Invention 4’  he plays a simple melody with his right hand over a comping which is constant and gentle.

In ’Invention13’ he improvises with a lot of freedom on a C pedal also with some blues elements.

Overall, this record looks like a painting on which he draws his ideas with a lot of freedom. If you are a European Jazz Trio’s fan, it maybe worth listening this top quality album.

Review in Nadann.de

[translation in English-->]

Marc van Roon (1967), from the Hague, is one of the most intelligent jazz musicians found in the Netherlands. His music is very well thought-out, tasteful and often deeply emotional. Together with his partner, alto saxophonist Tineke Postma he co-leads a wonderful quartet for many years. He is also active with his trio and in a duo with drummer Wim Kegel. His latest production is a comprehensive solo project that takes up almost a full-length CD.

On this CD van Roon improvises on musical themes taken from the works of his favourite composer; the great Johann Sebastian Bach (1665-1750). He immerses himself deeply in these improvisations which results in 26 beautiful miniatures. Music that never contains a glimpse of tediousness, but, reveals the core of the eminent musician van Roon.

It is certain that JS Bach was a brilliant improviser, but unfortunately, nothing has been recorded. We get an idea from the numerous surviving compositions. In thirteen 'Variations' van Roon remains close to the chosen themes of the master and in fifteen 'Inventions' he plays free adaptations of this material. He gives a contemporary view of the music of JS Bach and expands it harmonically even further. Quotes from the works of the great baroque composer can sometimes be heard surprisingly, appearing like a jack-in-a-box.

JS Bach's original Goldberg Variations and Inventions display a brilliant and unparalleled musical fantasy. Van Roon presents a contemporary version in which the influences of leading jazz pianists Keith Jarrett and Paul Bley are integrated. The artistic result is a profound musical stream of consciousness, with improvisations that seem to emerge from the subconscious.

Single-handedly Van Roon shows what the current Dutch jazz has to offer in its best light. The ultimate music for connoisseurs. An album that moreover has been recorded brilliantly and should definitely be brought to the attention of an international audience.

Review in Musik an Sich by Wolfgang Giese

Review in German web-magazine Musik an Sich by Wolfgang Giese.
